Windows WVU Mountaineers Desktop Theme
(Windows 95, 98, ME, etc)
Eric Shinn has released a Freeware version of a WVU Mountaineers Desktop Theme. There is no connection between this product and the WVU Mountaineers Webring other than the fact we offer it here for download. Direct all questions and comments regarding the Desktop Theme to Eric.
The file is LARGE and will only work on Windows 95 platforms (or later) that have the PLUS! Theme manager or one of the many shareware Theme managers installed. If you don't have Microsoft PLUS! and need a theme installer, try THIS LINK. NOTE...we haven't tried this progam.
Download the ZIP file here (below). Use a product like WinZIP to unzip the file and copy the contents to the directory where your other Windows Theme files reside. To install, click on MY COMPUTER, CONTROL PANEL and then DESKTOP THEMES. If you need further help please contact Eric.
Feel free to distribute the Desktop Theme to your friends. Eric only asks that you DO NOT CHARGE for the theme. If you make any modifications and would like to share them with other users, please contact the Ringmaster and we will gladly add them to this site for download by others. Also, if you choose to offer your website as a download site for this product, please let us know and we will add your URL to this site.

Add-Ons and Modifications
The following items are released to the Public Domain as FREEWARE by the author, Jay Paulovicks. You are permitted to use these files for your own personal use or however you choose, provided you do not charge for them or in anyway make a profit from them, save the normal charge for duplication and media. Note, however, that some of this is NOT original artwork, specifically the wallpaper photos. While we give you the right to use our modified copies of them, their use may be limited by the original photographer.
We offer a couple modifications to the original WVU Desktop Theme. Specifically, these include an animated musket (firing) for the "Busy" animated cursor and an animated Flying WV (similar to our Webring logo) for the "Working in Background" animated cursor. These files have been named the same as the original files in the package so you need only copy them into the directory where your theme is stored and reboot your computer for them to take affect. NOTE- you can use either or both with your present theme, even if it's not the WVU theme. However, you will have to rename them to the file names used by your desktop theme program.
In case you're interested, we tried to develop a musket for the regular "Gold Arrow" pointer but the brown colors of the musket were hard to see on dark colored screens. If you have any ideas for a neat "pointer" please let us know and we'll try to make it.
The Mountaineer Icon used for the Network Neighborhood was really a BMP file. When it is re-sized by Windows, the head on the Mountaineer looks "squashed". We offer an Icon of the Mountaineer you can replace the original with. It IS somewhat smaller, due to the limitations of an Icon file, but is more realistic looking.
The simplest way to use it is to copy the file into your theme directory, replacing the original file. Reboot your computer and the icon will be installed. As an alternative, you could rename it to another name and copy into your theme directory. From here you would
1. RIGHT CLICK on the desktop and select PROPERTIES
2. Select the PLUS! tab
3. Highlight the NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD icon
4. Select CHANGE ICON
5. BROWSE to find the new icon file and install
We offer a couple "mods" of the background picture of Mountaineer Field. First, we offer a "brightened" BMP file if you think the orginal one was too dark. Choose the BMP version below.
Second, the original picture of Mountaineer Field is a bitmap file (BMP) and is HUGE! (579K). If you are short of memory AND do not intend to "stretch" the picture to fit your screen (the file quality won't support it), we suggest you try the JPEG (JPG) file we offer for download. It is only 87K. It includes a modified THEME file (to replace the original one) that will allow you to use the JPG file with the Theme. Simply place both files in the directory where your theme files reside.

Remember, if you choose to use the JPG file, the quality does NOT support enlarging to full screen.
Here are some additional pictures you can use as wallpaper for your Mountaineer Theme. The easiest way to use them is to save them in your WINDOWS directory. To use them, simply
As an alternative to this, you can simply rename the file to the default Field.bmp used by the Theme program and save the file to the directory where the Theme files reside.

Here is a nifty Screen Saver with scenes from around the WVU campus. Download this self-extracting EXE file and click on it to extract the files. Pay attention to where they are extracted and then go to that directory and click on INSTALL.EXE. Download Screen Saver (2.5 MB) HERE
Obviously, you need a copy of WinZip to unzip the files. If you need a copy of WinZip, you can download the latest version HERE. It's free!
We had several other links for commercial screensavers but they seem to have disappeared. Do you have a link to one or market one that you would like to have linked here? If so, drop me an email and I'll add it to the list.
