(updated April 23, 2006)

Dear WVU fan,

Thanks for inquiring about the Mountaineer Email Group.

Our Mountaineer Email Group is a means for WVU alumni, students, friends, and fans to exchange news, information, rumors, and opinions about Mountaineer sports. The group was started on May 19, 1996, with just a handful of fans and alums. We now have about 500 members, and have had members located in 40 states and seven foreign countries. Members send their messages to a single "list server" email address; the list server then sends the messages out to all the members.

To join our group, send an email message to Vernon Bailey at vernon.bailey@verizon.net and ask to be added to the group. Your email address then will be added to our list server and you will receive all the emails posted to the group. We will not provide your name and email address to anyone outside the Mountaineer Email Group.

If you later decide you'd rather not be a member, all you have to do is notify Vernon Bailey and your name and address will be deleted from our list.

Cost to you: Nothing. Mountaineers are always free!

Two things to remember: First, this email group is for Mountaineer fans only! If you join, you'll receive lots of messages every day containing news and views about the Mountaineers; if you aren't a true Gold and Blue fan, you don't want to join. (We don't want to scare you away, but while on some days you might get only a few Mountaineer emails, on high-traffic days you might get a hundred! A "digest" format is also available, in which you receive all the MEG emails collected into a few batches each day, giving you all the messages but cutting down on the number of separate emails you receive.) Second, we have everyone from little kids to senior citizens reading our Mountaineer messages. If you join, and then post vulgar or offensive messages, your address will be deleted from our server.

After you join, you will be sent a welcome letter containing the list server address, more information, and a list of WVU-related Internet sites.

On July 1, 1997, the Mountaineer Email Group was recognized by the WVU Alumni Association as its first "cyberspace chapter," believed to be the first such chapter affiliated with any university in the United States. Although we're proud to receive this honor, we want to stress that the Mountaineer Email Group continues to welcome WVU fans and friends who are not alumni of WVU, and you can be a member of the Mountaineer Email Group without being a member of the Alumni Association.

If you have any questions about the Mountaineer Email Group, want to join our group, or want additional information, please contact Vernon Bailey at vernon.bailey@verizon.net , or send a note to Jay Paulovicks, Webmaster of this site at jayp@jayp.net. Again, thanks for asking about the Mountaineer Email Group.

Let's Go-o-o-o-o Mountaineers! BEAT PITT!

Editor's Note: Greg Todd originally penned this note, and while not still a member of MEG, his initial thoughts and guidance are important to the group's creation and existence.
